Strange Folk evolved in 2002, and are based in Hertfordshire. But there’s nothing strange about this band of three guys and one girl, or their music - which is pure rock with a touch of folk.
This is a class act with total commitment at all live performances. And that’s not all. Strange Folk write all of their own material - a fusion of many influences. The band also perform a wide range of cover songs. Members are:
Annalise Spurr - vocals / tambourine / song writer. Originally from Somerset, and comes from a musical family with a north-east and Armenian background. Her father played the fiddle in the folk band: Galleon. Annalise’s influences are mostly from the 60’s and 70’s, and include Janis Joplin, The Doors, T-Rex, Blondie, System of a Down and Alice in Chains. Her vocals are strong and unique and give this band the edge.
Dave Setterfield - guitars / mandolin / song writer. Brought up in Hertfordshire, and was surrounded by 60’s and 70’s music throughout his childhood. Dave’s inflences include Jimi Hendrix, Free, The Who and Peter Green. He studied music at college with Annalise, and then gained a degree in Music Business at university. Dave’s guitar style, and creative songwriting skills, expresses the sound and style of the band.
Ian Prangnell - bass. Born and bred in Hertfordshire, and was very involved with music at school. He has been involved with several bands, playing guitar and bass since he was 13. Ian's influences include Blind Melon, Jimi Hendrix, Genesis and Led Zeppelin. His knowledge of music theory, and driving bass lines, are an integral part of the band's sound.
Steve Birkett - drums. Born and bred in the Peak District of Derbyshire, and has been a drummer with a selection of bands both in the North and in London, before he finally settled in Hertfordshire. A love for Heavy Metal adds more 'rock' to the approach and drive of the band; while influences of a more mellow nature are reflected in the melodic essence of Strange Folk's songs. Steve's influences include Jimi Hendrix, Judas Priest, Lindisfarne, P.J. Harvey, Saxon, and Slayer
